Beat the Top 6 Exercise Excuses and Get Fit

November 19, 2008

You are in a mid-afternoon slump and the last thing you feel like doing is going to the gym. Sound familiar? You find yourself making excuses and before you know it, you have talked yourself out of going. The key to getting past this is to learn some strategies to beat the excuses.
1: I am tired!
You can still exercise when you are tired – you will gain the extra benefit of feeling more alive when you have finished! A 10 minute brisk walk can give you up to 2 hours of renewed energy. People who work out in the morning have a better chance of keeping to their exercise routine, so it is worth getting up a little early to fit it in.

2: I‘m too busy!
A good exercise session will give you renewed energy, relieve stress and make you more productive by clearing your head and improving your perpsective. Take a short break -even a 10 minute walk will give you results

3: I’ll never look like …………..!

Comparing yourself to others is unrealistic and frustrating, and will quickly make you discouraged. Set yourself activity goals instead of results goals and the results will come anyway. Your goal could be the frequency, length, intensity or type of activity. Your goals should be achievable but require you to stretch to be effective.

4: I’m still sore from my last workout
Recent studies have shown that people who did some light exercise the day after a strenuous workout experienced less muscle soreness than those who didn’t. This is because exercise increases the blood flow to the muscles, removing waste products and increasing oxygen, allowing the muscle to repair faster.

5: I’m bored with my workout!
Boredom is one of the most common reasons why people give up exercising, so it is important to vary your routine or try something new. Sign up for a new class, vary your workout on alternate days or train with a friend to lighten things up.

6: I’m stressed!
Exercise helps to reduce stress and frustration and improves your mood. People who regularly work out handle stressful sutuations more easily and tend to suffer less anxiety and depression. Try a form of exercise that doesn’t require you to concentrate, like walking or running, and you may find that you are able to solve irritating problems as you exercise.

Use these tactics to blast away the excuses and get fit
