Be Your Slimmest This Winter – 5 Hints

Winter is couch potato time – curling up under a blanket with a good book or movie, craving comfort food that is high in fat and sugar and hiding your body inside oversized sweaters.
These 5 hints to beat the winter bulge will help you enjoy your slimmest winter ever.

1. Watch what you eat: pretty obvious, huh? But did you know that high water content foods fill you up without adding calories. So fill up on hot cereals, warming soups, vegetables and fruit. Keep a good stock of these foods in, and reach for them instead of traditional ‘comfort food.’ Have soups ready to heat up quickly (Home made soups are really good for you and very easy to make – keep a pot on the stove) and cook up some apples or peaches for a quick snack.

2. Sunshine: rug up and get out in the sun when you can. Studies have proven that being exposed to sunlight raises our serotonin, which is responsible for boosting our mood, and so we feel happier and less likely to overeat.

3. Eat protein: increase the protein in your diet to about 30% of your calorie intake and you could be cutting your total calorie count considerably. Protein keeps you from feeling hungry for longer, so you eat less. Studies show that it seems to fool the brain into thinking we have eaten more than we have. Choose lean protein like beans and nuts, fish and chicken without the skin.

4. Slim comfort food: healthy alternatives are available to traditional comfort food. You can’t go past a steaming mug of hearty warming soup full of vegies, beans and lean meat. Find one of the numerous healthy alternatives cook books that are available and try something new. The secret is to have snacks pre-prepared so you don’t reach for the easy and fattening alternatives.

5. Do you need help?: book a personal trainer for a weekly workout session to help keep you on track. Rug up and take a brisk walk in the invigorating air or take up a winter sport.

It may require some effort and determination to stay on track this winter but think how great you will feel next summer when you don’t have all those extra pounds to get rid of? You will feel so much better over winter too – when you are fit and healthy, your body is better able to fight off the winter viruses that everyone catches. So follow these tips and have your slimmest winter ever!
