Atkins Diet Plan
During weight loss programs, diet plays a very important role. It is very essential to follow the right diet pattern in order to bring the body back to shape and burn the extra layer of fats. One such diet plan is the low carbohydrate diet. Dr. Atkins planned a diet based on this diet plan. According to him, one should eat less carbohydrates and more proteins. He created a diet plan according to four phases.
The first phase is the induction phase in which a person eats only 20gms of carbohydrates per day and caffeine and alcohol is strictly avoided. This leads to a state of ketosis in which body burns fats as fuel instead of glucose. In this way, a person can lose about 6-8 pounds every week in this phase. This is the initial phase and it leads to more weight loss.
Then the next phase is introduced which is called the ongoing weight loss. In this phase, 5 grams of carbohydrates are slowly introduced in the diet but the quality is limited. This phase lasts till you achieve a weight within 10 pounds of your goal weight.
The third phase is the pre-maintenance phase which allows you to include about 10 grams of carbohydrates per week in the diet. The basic idea in this diet plan is to find the critical carbohydrate level in order to stabilize your weight. In this phase, there is slow weight loss. This is the phase where you can try different food items and safely add them if they do not lead to weight gain.
After achieving the goal weight, you enter the pre-maintenance phase. In this phase you include the good carbohydrates in the diet plan. The basic idea in this phase is to go for healthy carbohydrates like whole wheat bread. You need to maintain the weight loss and try to stick to the goal weight. If you gain weight again, then you need to start from the first phase and try to reach this phase again.
There is no doubt that if you follow Atkins diet plan, you will lose weight very quickly and you will not feel hungry as your body produces ketene, which suppress the appetite. But this diet plan has its side effects such as lack of energy, feeling tired, bad breath, and constipation.
Just don’t follow this plan blindly. Be aware of the pros and cons before actually implementing this plan. It is better if you seek your doctor’s advice before following it.
