Athlete’s Foot
Tinea pedis, better known as athlete’s foot, causes the skin between your toes to become dry, cracked and painful. This particular type of fungus loves a warm environment and your shoes provide a comfy home for it to grow, and it loves teenagers and adults.
Although it is possible to get this from walking barefoot in an effected area, such as a pool or a community shower, form fitting shoes are the biggest culprit. This is especially known for people that play sports or exercise often.
One mistake that many people make is not drying their feet properly after taking a shower, exercising or even swimming, just to name a few, before donning a pair of socks and shoes. This can provide a nice home for athlete’s foot.
Signs of athlete’s foot can be flaking or white soft skin in between your toes, cracked, painful and itchy skin and even a possible burning sensation. It is possible for the infection to spread if it is not treated quickly. It can also lead to other problems, such as ringworm in the groin area and possibly have it move to their hands.
Generally a doctor can take a look at your feet and be able to determine if you have athlete’s foot. The general treatment is a cream or spray that you can get at the pharmacy, over the counter, and use it 2 times daily. It is important to keep your feet clean and dry during this period and to continue the treatment for a few extra days to keep it away.
If the infection goes deeper than the cream can attack, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic for infection. In order to prevent yourself from getting this or from having future outbreaks, keep your feet clean and dry them properly after getting them wet. Let your feet air out whenever the opportunity presents itself and wear cotton socks.
By following a few precautionary measures, you will be able to avoid athlete’s feet altogether and any future outbreaks if you are susceptible to them. Keep your feet healthy.
