The name of arsenic has become synonymous with poisoning as it is a heavy metal which shares various toxic characteristics with other heavy metals like lead and mercury. Arsenic is primarily used in the production of glass and semi-conductors and it can also be found in certain water supplies. Arsenic can be present in items like tobacco smoke, laundry detergent, sea food, bear and even drinking water at times. Arsenic can lead to various health disorders ranging from severe headaches to fatal consequences in extreme cases.

Continued exposure to arsenic can build up over a period of time and lead to various symptoms of arsenic poisoning. These primarily include dehydration, diarrhea, liver failure, muscle cramps, difficulty of speech, renal failure, stomach pains and also ailments of heart, kidney and lung. Exposure to arsenic can also lead to various kinds of cancer like skin cancer, liver cancer and cancers of lung and lymphatic system. The final result of continuous arsenic poisoning can be coma and even death.

If a person is likely to be frequently exposed to arsenic, he needs to take extra caution to prevent its fatal consequences. People who work in a job that produces any kind of pesticide or insecticide or people who think they are at a proximity to arsenic should take precaution by including lots of sulfur in their diet. Thus eating foods like eggs, onions, beans, legumes and garlic can be beneficial as the sulfur present in these food items help in eliminating some of the arsenic from the body. Similarly, fiber is also beneficial in washing out arsenic from the body and thus one should eat whole grains, cereals, fruits and vegetables. In addition, one should get one’s symptoms checked from the doctor so as to treat the problem in its initial stages thereby helping in the prevention of its fatal consequences.
