Are Carb Blockers the Answer to Weight Loss

June 16, 2009

carbblokerweightLow carb nutritional programs were designed to limit the amount of carbohydrates that a person consumes. Two low carb diet programs that stand out are the Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet.

The difference between the two is the amount of carbohydrates that are actually restricted. With the Atkins Diet, the early stages restrict all carbohydrates. On the other hand, the South Beach Diet allows the dieter to eat what are called “good” carbohydrates. Both of these diet plans can be difficult for a person.  Why is that?

The reason these low carb or carb free diets are difficult is because our bodies need carbohydrates, which are converted into glucose for energy. When we reduce the amount of carbohydrates that we eat, our body loses an energy source. The lack of glucose can cause the body to become tired.

The term carbohydrate is derived from the molecular compounds that make up a carbohydrate. Carbohydrates are made up of carbonyls and hydroxyls.

Carbohydrates can exist as monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. Monosaccharides are known as simple sugars. Simple sugars are not capable of being converted into any other form.

Oligosaccharids are comprised of two or more monosaccharides. Oligosaccharides fall into one of two categories: disaccharides or trisaccharides. Polysaccharides are made up of multiple monosaccharides. A polysaccharide needs to be broken down into a solitary unit.

Carbohydrates are primarily digested in the mouth and through the small intestine. When a person chews their food, the digestive enzyme alpha amylase begins to convert the carbohydrates into simple sugars.

When the food is done being chewed, it passes to the stomach where digestion briefly stops. Digestion begins again when the food passes from the stomach to the small intestine.

Since it is essential to the body’s ability to function, carbohydrates should not be completely eliminated. So what do you do to stop the excess carbohydrates from gathering in your body in the form of fat? Try a carb blocker supplement.

These supplements work to stop the digestive enzyme alpha amylase from breaking down the carbohydrates, which would then be converted into sugar and stored as fat.

Carb blockers are able to prevent carbohydrates from being absorbed due to a product called phaseolus vulgaris, which is extracted primarily from white kidney beans.

Carb blocker supplements can be used to prevent weight gain but they do not work on their own. You need to help them work by maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise.
