Are Body Building Supplements Safe

April 16, 2009

buildbodyBody building supplements refer to products that are consumed by athletes and body builders to enable them to gain more muscle mass and tone their bodies.

These supplements also help improve athletic performance and enable the athlete to repair their injured muscles.  Athletes and body builders use supplements to enhance their performance.

Following are a list of the most common body building supplements that are used.

Glutamine is one of the most widely found amino acids.  Glutamine is stored in the muscles.  Studies show that every time a person performs an intense workout they use up the glutamine found in their muscles.  Many body builders choose to take glutamine supplements to quickly replenish the lost glutamine.

The casein supplements have the highest content of glutamine.  It also contains casomorphin which works to release amino acids over an extended period of time.  One example of casein is soy protein although it could affect the estrogen levels of body builders.

Amino acids are responsible for building protein.  Your body breaks down the protein into amino acids.  The amino acids travel to your stomach and intestines.  There are three types of amino acids: valine, leucine and isoleucine.

Prohormones enhance the hormones found in the body.  Body builders use them to increase their testosterone levels.  There have not been many studies done on prohormones and their health side effects are not completely identified.

Creatine is a natural acid that provides the muscle cells with extra energy.  Creatine is widely used by body builders.  Studies show that creatine gives a person increased power, strength and energy and can add a notable amount of muscle mass in a short amount of time.  Creatine also helps the brain’s performance.

Another type of supplements is thermogenic supplements.  These increase a person’s metabolic rate.  Those who use thermogenic supplements have a great amount of energy, agility and strength.  They are used to maintain a body builder’s current physique while burning excess fat.  Some well known types of thermogenic supplements are aspirin, ephedrine and caffeine.

Nitric Oxide Stimulators relax the muscle tissues and the blood vessels.  When taken, your muscles quickly pop back into shape during an intense workout.

None of the above supplements have been classified by the FDA as dietary supplements and this is concerning.  Therefore, none of them have been thoroughly tested for safety and purity.
