Anemia
Anemia is caused by the deficiency of iron. When the intake and absorption of elements required to make red blood cells is inadequate, the blood becomes deficient in red blood cells andultimately hemoglobin. This condition is termed as anemia.
It could be a possibly life threatening disorder. Iron is the most essential element to prevents anemia and keeps red blood cells healthy. Actually, iron is required to produce hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the red part of red blood cells. It binds with oxygen and carry it all around our body.
One of the other disorders called pernicious anemia is caused by too much sweet over a long period of time. Adding fiber by including green-leafy vegetables to the diet can lessen this problem. Folate deficiency results in a condition called megaloblastic anemia. Megaloblastic anemia leads to an irreversible degeneration of the central nervous system. Treating iron deficiency anemia due to dietary deficiency stimulates bone-marrow production of hemoglobin. The red-blood-cell pigment known as “heme” carries oxygen to cells.
One in five women suffer from iron deficiency. It decreases the ability of red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body leading to various disorders such as fatigue, breathlessness, digestion problems, loss of appetite, weakness etc. A pregnant woman requires plenty of iron, which cannot be derived from food sources alone. It may leave her susceptible to anemia and exhaustion. Moreover, anemia can cause less resistance to fight off infections. It can also cause difficulty in hemorrhaging during the birth.
Deficiencies in Vitamin B12 also causes anemia and neurodegenerative disease. People with sickle cell anemia common amongst heavy drinkers, women on oral contraceptives, women of childbearing age, pregnant and nursing women require extra folate in their food. There are many dietary sources of iron such as, steamed clams, Cream of Wheat cereal, tofu, soybean and all the green vegetables.
