Amenorrhea and prevention

September 1, 2008

Amenorrhea is a condition in which a woman of childbearing age is not able to menstruate. A woman menstruation cycle falls every 23 to 35 days. This periodic cycle is regulated by the hypothalamus, a structure in brain also responsible for maintaining body temperature, blood pressure and appetite. The hypothalamus stimulates the pituitary gland to release hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle namely, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. These hormones are responsible for periodic changes in the lining of the uterus, including menstruation. Regular menstrual cycles are dependent on pituitary gland, hypothalamus and proper functioning of ovaries and uterus.

Primary amenorrhea is a condition when the first menstrual period is not started by the age of 16. The problem is mostly in young women, typically in athletes, underweight, woman, females with abnormal reproductive organs or genetically disordered woman,  .
Secondary amenorrhea happens when a woman who has menstruated previously fails to menstruate further. Amenorrhea affects around 2% to 5% in the United States. Female athletes mostly suffer from the problem, who exercise very intensely or who increase the intensity of exercise rapidly.

Primary amenorrhea can be prevented by following a regular and correct exercise program and also by maintaining a normal weight for their height and age. Primary amenorrhea result of anatomic aberration of the reproductive tract cannot be prevented. To prevent secondary amenorrhea few steps can be taken such as, exercising moderately but not intensely,  eating  a low-fat diet but should be able to  meet your recommended daily nutritional needs, avoiding emotional stress or and daily conflicts of life etc in order to reach an ideal body weight and toning of muscles.. The balance between your work, recreation and relaxation is equally important to prevent the problem of amenorrhea.
Excessive alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking should be abstained as much as possible. Alcoholism promotes amenorrhea
