Alcohol In Early Pregnancy May Prompt Fetal Cell Death

September 4, 2008

A recent study has revealed that even few glasses of wine over a short period during early pregnancy may cause fetal problems. It has been proved and stated after a research undertaken by the researchers from the Medical College of Georgia.

The fetal alcohol syndrome afflicts one in 1,000 babies. The initial symptoms of the syndrome include facial distortion such as a flat and high upper lip, small eye openings, and a short nose. Researchers are still trying to explore whether these symptoms can help conclude how much alcohol at what point in pregnancy may cause fetal problems to provide maximum protection by accurate and timely warnings.

One of the biochemist in the Medical College of Georgia Schools of Medicine and Graduate Studies are concentrating on how alcohol consumption influence neural crest cells, which shape the upper part of the skull to further help women from the mishap. Because it is more difficult to strictly control oneself from alcoholism. The researchers are studying the affect, and experimenting with mice. They are evaluating cell death in mice comparing different levels of alcohol consumption to the cell death that occurs during normal development of the fetus.

Most of the evidences have proved that just a few glasses of wine consumed in an hour in the first few weeks of fetal life can further aggravate the risk of cell death.  The women drinking alcohol may even get a buzz at the very first guzzle. But prolonged drinking at intervals banishes the initial impact. While doing so, the fetus undergoes an irreversible damage.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that pregnant women and sexually active women not using effective contraceptives should abstain from drinking to prevent the fetal death as there is no immediate therapy or medicine to protect against the damage
