Alcohol and muscles
Alcohol has detrimental effects on our overall health. Most men have a problem with letting go of their drink. There are many questions surrounding the correlation between alcohol and building muscles.
Some of the ways in which alcohol can affect your muscles are given below.
Growth hormones and alcohol
Alcohol has an effect on how the growth hormone is released. Growth hormone matters in muscle building because it stimulates the other cells to grow and develop besides promoting proper growth of bones. If you are deficient in this hormone, then cell growth will not be optimal and hence it will hinder muscle development.
Testosterone and alcohol
This one has a direct effect on muscle growth. Testosterone is the reason behind men having more muscle than women do. Alcohol causes the liver to release a certain toxin that hinders testosterone release.
Effect of alcohol on recovery
When you are building muscle, you need a certain amount of rest so that your body can recover. However, when you take alcohol, you body instead of resting will go to work to remove alcohol. As a result, you will end up feeling not so fresh at your next workout.
Dehydration and alcohol
Alcohol is a diuretic causing you to visit the bathroom more often. When you are working out, you are already losing water and then to add to it, you lose more water by frequently urinating. This can cause you to get dehydrated.
Glycogen synthesis and alcohol
Muscle derives energy from muscle glycogen also besides ATP. However, when alcohol is present, then the body gives preference to alcohol synthesis compared to glycogen synthesis. This causes the muscle stores to diminish.
Aerobic ability and alcohol
Alcohol leads to a rise in the body’s blood pressure and hence a related rise in the heart rate. When you are doing some aerobic activity, your heart rate is already high, however, if you do it with alcohol in your body then it will only increase the rate further and cause the exercise to become harder than it is.
Body fat and alcohol
You might want to listen to this. Alcohol has calories, which will add up drink after drink and make you gain fat.
