A Safe and Effective Way for Teens to Lose Weight

March 5, 2009

The teenage years are difficult.  It is a time when a young girl or boy’s body begins to change.  It is also a very judgmental time for young adults.  Young adults have a specific acceptable body image in their mind and all try to attain it.  Teenager’s that face problems of being overweight are often ridiculed.  Teenagers often turn to diets and exercises that are not defined for their growing and changing bodies.

And while the diets and exercises may initially work, they can cause problems with their bodies later.  Weight issues can be caused by glandular problems, they may be hereditary or they may be the result of lack of exercise and poor eating.  Following are some diet and exercise tips geared specifically for the evolving bodies of teenage boys and girls.

Teenagers have become very sedentary.  The first change that needs to be made to lose weight and maintain a healthy body weight is to get active again.  Walking is an easy way to start exercising.  Walking works the entire body.

Start off walking around the neighborhood.  As your stamina increases, go for longer walks and pick up the speed.  You may consider walking to school instead of taking the bus.  Because teenagers are on a small budget, they may not be able to join a gym.  But that doesn’t mean that they can’t exercise.  Their schools most likely offer a variety of team sports and intramural activities.

They can find a sport that is appealing and join it.  If they are self conscious, there’s no better place to exercise than in the privacy of their bedroom.  They can pick up an age appropriate workout video and have fun in their room.

Eating habits play a huge part in the teenager’s weight gain and management.  Because teenagers are always on the go, they do not take the time to prepare a healthy meal at home.  Fast food becomes a quick and easy alternative meal.  Teenagers seem to be drawn to fast food because of its sweet and salty tastes.  Start while you are in your teenage years to avoid fast food restaurants and you will continue to do so into adulthood.

Adults who are overweight more than likely started off as teenagers that were overweight due to poor eating habits.  Another food that teenagers seem to crave is sweets.  The sugar found in candy, snack food and fruit juices gets stored in the body.  It is used to provide quick bursts of energy when exercising.  But if the teenager is not exercising and using up the sugar, then it gets stored as fat.

Replace these unhealthy eating habits with healthy and nutritional foods.  During the teenage years it is most important that their growing bodies receive the proper amount of nutrients, vitamins and calories.  Trade a piece of candy for a sweet piece of fruit.  Crunch down on a carrot instead of potato chips.  And remember to incorporate some form of physical activity into your daily routine.
