A Diet for those that Suffer from Colitis
Having colitis can be a real pain in the butt…literally. But jokes apart, colitis can be a debilitating illness that affects a person for the rest of his life. Colitis affects the digestive system and causes inflammation of the colon. Because colitis impacts the gastrointestinal system, people with colitis have to make life altering changes to their diet in order to minimize problems. They need to add proteins, calories, vitamins A, D, B-12, and folic acid to their diets as well as minerals such as calcium and iron. Those with colitis also need to avoid certain foods that can cause bloating or diarrhea. Given here is a list of food items that can be included in a colitis diet and what should be avoided.
Dairy products such as milk can have uncomfortable affects to the stomach and colon. If you do choose to eat dairy, make sure it has a low lactose level which is easier to digest. Such foods are yogurt and hard cheeses. Foods that are high in fat, are processed or are battered or fried are hard for the body to digest. These kinds of foods can cause malabsorption in the body.
Caffeinated drinks and alcohol should be avoided. Do not consume a high fiber diet. Since a person with colitis already has a hard time processing food and is often faced with bouts of bloating and diarrhea, high fiber foods will only add to the discomfort. Trade in your normal routine of eating three heavy meals daily and replace it with five smaller meals throughout the day. This will ease the digestive system and not force it to work extra hard trying to digest a heavy meal. Remember to drink a lot of water. Water helps break down the food and makes it easier for the body to process. Chew your food slowly, masticate well for easier digestion. Make sure you eat a balanced meal with foods from each of the different nutrients groups. Go slow when introducing a new food into your diet.
