A Diabetic Diet

Diabetes is the result of an increase in the body’s blood sugar level.  Diabetes stays with the patient for the duration of their lives and is maintained by proper medication and a specific diet. The medications used to treat diabetes as well as the diet work to lower blood sugar levels and keep them at a healthy level.

Diets high in simple carbohydrates and sugars will spike the sugar levels and can harm the patient.  A diabetic’s diet needs to be well rounded and healthy.  Following are some foods that should be incorporated into a diabetic diet as well as those foods that should be avoided.

Diabetics are encouraged to eat meat such as pork, beef, chicken, turkey, and fish.  An animal’s organs such as the liver and heart are also acceptable as they have a high saturation of vitamins and minerals.  Animal fats such as beef fat and pork fat are permitted.  Seafood and fish are a staple in a diabetic’s diet.

Eggs other than omega-3 eggs and animal by-products such as cream, butter and yogurt can be consumed but do not eat cottage cheese as it is high in carbohydrates and low in fat.  Substitute butter for gravy and cream for milk.  Vegetables and fruits are good to eat sparingly as they contain sugar.  Feel free to season your food with salt, mustard and different types of herbs and spices.

Do not eat anything that is sugar based.  This includes candy, honey and sweeteners.  The best sweetener to use is Stevia.  Avoid chocolate and any product that says sugar-free.  Cakes, cereals, pastries, breads and any grainy foods such as rye and barley are not to be eaten.

Starchy vegetables such as potatoes are not allowed nor are certain vegetables such as carrots and corn as they are high in sugar.  Beans for the most part are to be avoided.  Milk should be used sparingly.  Unnatural, fast foods and junk food are not allowed on a diabetic diet.  Refrain from drinking fruit juices and soda which are high in sugar.

When planning a diabetic meal it is important to keep the portions of carbohydrates and sugars in balance.  Foods that are high in protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals work better at maintaining a healthy blood sugar level.
