6 muscle myths
December 11, 2008
Here are presented six most common misconceptions about weight lifting.
1. You will grow muscle in a week.
This is a common disbelief. Development of muscle in size and strength takes times. Once you start to lift weights for at least 21 days, it might still take about 10 weeks to see any result. It can’t happen in lesser time unless you are taking steroids.
2. You will gain weight if you lift weights.
This is partly true in that if you develop muscles then you will add to your weight. But it is also misleading because muscle is not the same as fat. Therefore, fat makes you look flabby whereas muscle will make you look fit. You will burn more calories because of the muscle and end up looking hotter.
3. Lifting lighter loads does not ensure longer leaner muscles.
The truth is that if you are not causing enough muscle fatigue, they won’t grow. You need to cause muscle fatigue after 15 repetitions. If doing 40 reps is not fatiguing you then you are going too easy and this will not develop your muscle tone. You can use a variety of weights and repetitions. If you lift lighter loads for more repetitions then you will develop endurance and doing the other way round you will develop strength.
4. If you concentrate on building muscle, you will not have to sacrifice on speed.
This is because if you develop good muscle strength, it will only help you in running faster. Strong muscles will know how to react spontaneously to increase your speed. You can also avoid undue injuries by strengthening your weak points.
5. Heavier weights are not the only way to get a strong physique.
It is true that you need heavy weights if you wish to build strength. But the truth is also that they are not the only option. When lifting weights, you can slow your speed. Doing this will stress the muscle and strengthen it. Lowering your weights also works in the same way.
6. If you do not lift weights, your muscles will not turn into fat.
This can be misleading though. The fact is that muscle and fat are two different kinds of tissue and it is not possible for one to get converted into the other. However, the truth is also that if you stop lifting weights your muscle will become soft because it will lose tone. In addition, the fat you deposit when you eat will not be burnt anymore.
