5 Ways to Avoid Holiday Pounds

April 16, 2009

holidaypoundsGreat! It’s holiday time again, time to relax and time to have heartthrobing New Year parties. But on the same,   time to gain those extra holiday pounds.

Friends, be cautious about these extra pounds, because even slight weight gain can remain accumulated throughout the year and lead to health risks.

But you need not to panic. Little efforts can surely beat these holiday pounds. Here are the five sure ways “not” to gain pounds during Thanksgiving-to-New Year’s holiday season.

Keep your meal time consistent

Even for holidays, set your meal time consistent. Start your day with a little exercise and healthy snacks. Don’t skip your breakfast as we usually get up late in the morning during the holidays and eat lots during lunch.

Lighten up your lunch and dinner. Avoid fast foods and soft drinks. Drink lots of water.

Don’t substitute vegetables and fruits for fatty foods. Have short meals within an interval of three-to-four hours. Don’t overeat at any meal; this is one of the main causes of gaining holiday pounds.

Have healthy snacks in-between meals. Keep your temptations for your favorite fatty cookies at minimum. Avoid alcohol.

Be smart enough to choose your party wisely

Of course it’s Christmas and New Year time, but not to remind you again, also the time to gain unwanted weight. No doubt parties are real fun.  But also parties are one of the places where temptation for food is very strong.

So, avoid social gatherings. Consider only the important ones. If anyhow, you have to go for a party, always have light snacks at home before you leave.

This will help you from eating in bulk. Opt for juices instead of alcohol. Alcohol carries lots of calories which get stored as fats in the body. Go for desserts, if available, instead of dinner plate. Start with a small plate instead of a huge one.

Keep yourself busy

Holidays are meant for spending time with your friends and family members. Make your focus on toning yourself and your life. Give time to your hobbies for which you never had enough time before.

Read books you like. Have a great time with your spouse and children.  Holidays are the opportunity to spend time pampering you. Have a full body massage, for example.

Have a nice hair cut. It will energize you like anything. Go shopping with friends. Help in household chores. These all can help you shift your mental gears and see the food as secondary.

Be in track with your nutrition plan

During the holiday season, it’s very easy to throw your diet plan out of the window. Spicy food is tempting. It seems very hard to maintain your usual diet plan. But think of its after-effects for a while before you go for these fat-rich sweets and cookies.

Focus on your long-term goals. Of course enjoy the holidays, but limit the cheating on your diet only to two very special occasions, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Make little bit extra effort to stay fit–Exercise regularly without fail

Whether it’s Christmas or New Year’s Eve, don’t forget to burn those extra holiday-fats. Boost your exercise to burn extra calories you tend to consume during holidays and you can have your favorite food a little extra.
