1st Trimester Diet

January 7, 2009

Pregnancy is a very exciting time in a women’s life. The thrill of a baby growing inside of you and feeling their tiny little feet and hands poking you every chance that they get, making sleep almost impossible, seems to never end. They always want to play when mom needs a nap.

Your body goes through many changes during the first trimester and your diet becomes one of the most important things to you. You wonder how much you should be eating, what types of foods to eat and does the baby need any special nutrients. During this very important time in your pregnancy, you need to start off on the right foot.

The doctor may prescribe you some supplements to take during your pregnancy, such as iron. This is very important to baby and you. Try to eat foods that are rich with it, such as whole grain breads, dried fruits and poultry, just to name a few. You will also want to cut back on the amount of caffeine you have. Try having a glass of orange juice in the morning instead of a cup of coffee. It is better for you and baby.

Your mom always said that you need to drink your milk to grow healthy and strong. This needs to start from the beginning. Vitamin D is essential in the baby’s growth. You may want to take supplements if you are not getting enough in your daily diet. Also, you should increase your daily calorie intake by at least 100 calories. You are going to need the energy.

It is also important to be careful when eating fish. The mercury in some fish is not good during your pregnancy. Examples are swordfish, tilefish and shark. And, if you use sweeteners that are not natural, keep these at a limit. Certain acids are also important to help prevent NTD better known as Neural Tube Defects.

If you are not sure what to drink or eat, speak with your doctor. He or she will be able to steer you in the right direction.
