12 Ways to avoid weight gain on holidays

December 27, 2008

Come Christmas and it is time to be happy and rejoice while meeting with family and having huge dinners. However, your New Year’s resolution this year does not have to be to lose all the extra pounds that you put on during Christmas.  Remember a few simple things and you will not find yourself heavier at the end of the holiday season.

1. Go easy on the calories during the day
Take some light snacks, veggies or fruits during the day so that you can have some decent amount during the actual dinner without exceeding your normal intake of calories.

2. Do not starve yourself
Have a little something if you feel ravenous. Do not gorge on the holiday treats and high-fat appetisers. Eat a small snack or drink a large glass of water to fill you up.

3. Take a healthy snack with you
if you cannot cook, you can still bring a vegetable platter with a low-fat dip and crackers. You will have a healthy option to all the high-fat holiday food.

4. When dinner is served, serve yourself.
By doing so, you will be able to choose what to eat and also control your portions better. If it is a buffet, do not load your plate with everything that is on the table. Take each course separately so that you will have time to know if you are hungry or not.

5. Go easy on the high-fat side dishes and toppings
Sour cream, cheese, gravy all seem to be pretty harmless. However, these are loaded with fat and so better avoid them or limit their intake.

6. Gorge on the healthy variety
While others might be leaving out steamed veggies, cranberry sauce, salad, lean ham and turkey breast, you help yourself with them.

7. Take time to eat
Do not gobble up. Chew your food properly and chat along so that you can eat slowly.

8. Cut the seconds
Try not to go for seconds. Holiday food is delicious, but ask yourself if you really are hungry enough for that extra serving of meatballs?

9. Keep the portion of dessert small
You will not be able to avoid it so help yourself with a little.

10. Drink sensibly
Alcohol increases your appetite and after a few drinks you will lose your will power too. Therefore, go easy on those holiday drinks.

11. Get moving
Take a walk in the neighbourhood. Make a snowman, have a snowball fight. Do whatever except crashing out on the couch.

12. Make time for a workout
You can make some time in a busy holiday if you want to. Take some time out and workout. This will burn off the extra calories that you might have put in.

Do not worry and go enjoy your holiday, while keeping fit.
