11 safety tips for outdoor exercise

Running is a great way to exercise and enjoy the great outdoors at the same time. Unfortunately, the great outdoors is not as safe as it once was. There are precautions you can take so that you are safe and can enjoy being outside at the same time.

Many of us enjoy listening to music while we have are morning jog or evening run. Wearing headphones can be dangerous. You are unable to hear if someone is running behind you, a car that may be behind you and even possible injuries.

It is also important to run in populated areas that are well lit. Stick to the areas you know the best. Another safety precaution is to tell someone where you will be running and your time schedule. If for some reason you do not return on time, they can call you or take the necessary steps to make sure that you are safe.

If at all possible, run with a buddy or even take your dog along. You should also vary the running route that you take. Running the same routine in the same place every day gives someone the opportunity to track your moves.

When running in an area where there is traffic, always face on-coming traffic and be mindful of traffic lights and crossing signs. Also, be sure that you have eye contact with drivers. Leave your jewelry at home and keep any change that you may take for emergency phone calls in your shorts or in your pants pocket.

It is important to wear clothing that is light and reflective. This is especially important if you are running in the evening. You also want to make sure that you have some sort of identification on you as well. If you do not have pockets, write your info on your shoes.

These helpful tips will work in trying to keep you safe. You will be able to enjoy your run without the worry of injury or possible criminal activity. Enjoy the outdoors once again and feel safe while on your run.
