Introduction
Tinea cruris is often labeled as a Jock itch and it refers to any itching groin rashes of men. Infection often arrives from the feet (medically known as a tinea pedis) or nails (medically known as a tinea unguium) originally, spread due to scratching or using some common cloths like infected towels. Tinea cruris might form ring-like patterns onto the buttocks. Tinea cruris may be very itchy. Tinea pedis, Tinea manuum, and Tinea cruris denote to Tinea corporis that is restricted to the feet, hands, and groins, respectively.
Tinea cruris or ringworm of the groins is an infection occurs at groin regions because of fungi. The most common etiologic factors for tinea cruris involve Trichophyton rubrum and Epidermophyton floccosum and to a lesser extent, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton verrucosum are responsible. Tinea cruris is a communicable condition that gets transmitted through fomites like contaminated towels or hotels’ bedspreads, or by auto-inoculation from some reservoirs on the hands or foot (tinea manuum, tinea pedis, tinea unguium).
The etiologic components produce keratinases those allow invasion of the cornfield cell layer of the epidermal. The host immune response might prevent deeper invasion and risk factors for those infections or recurrence include wearing tight-fitted or wet clothes or undergarments.
The fungus
Tinea cruris is a common skin infection caused due to fungi that is divided into three groups - Fungi preferring earth (geophile), animal (zoophile) and Fungi preferring humans (anthropophile). Although there are also other causes of jock itch, this term has turned as synonymous with tinea cruris The appearance is similar to ringworm ( tinea corporis ). The rash has a scaly raised red border that spreads down the inner thighs from the groin or scrotum. Tinea cruris may form ring-like patterns on the buttocks. Tinea cruris can be very itchy.
Causes of Tinea Cruris
All fungal infections are caused because of the dermatophytes. They are nothing but the microorganisms living onto cells in the outer layer of the skins. The fungus would grow best in warm and moist places and they have a tendency to get worse during the sunny days as in the seasons of summers since there, the sweating is naturally increased. Jock itch would occur almost exclusively in adult males. It can sometimes accompany athlete's foots and ringworms. Jock itch might be triggered because of the friction caused due to clothes and prolonged wetness in the groin regions (such as because of the excessive sweating). Jock itch might be communicable condition and thus, it can pass from one person to another by direct skin-to-skin contact or through some common things used such as briefs or towels.
Other risk factors:
1. Obesity
2. Tight clothes
3. Remaining in wet/water
4. Hot, humid conditions
5. Using public showers and/or locker rooms
6. Excessive perspiration
7. A weakened immune system might also be a main cause of tinea cruris
8. The warm, moist environments are the perfect place for the fungus growth, thus giving rise to cause tinea cruris
Signs and Symptoms of Tinea Cruris
There are some typical signs and symptoms that include the following:
Itching in groin regions, thigh skin folds and/or anal region
There might be abnormally darkened or lighter skin
The condition is most active at the edges of the patches
There might be burning sensation on or around the groin
There would be flaking, peeling or cracking of the skins in the groin regions
Treatment for Tinea Cruris
There are many ways to treat such condition. The treatments include a topical therapy that has local application. For severe cases, a patient may require some oral antifungal drugs such as itraconazole, fluconazole terbinafine, ketoconazole or griseofulvin.
One should apply the lotion to the affected area and also to the surrounding 4-6 cm of normal skins in addition to the rashes to restrict this to spread. One should also remember to dry the groin regions carefully after bathing using separate towel. Tinea cruris is only one causative factor for groin itching. If the rash does not improve, one should seek some further evaluations. In order to prevent the condition, one should not share towels, sheets or any personal clothes.
Other tips to avoid the condition are to avoid wearing occlusive or synthetic clothes and to go for wearing cotton underwear since it avoids this condition. One should keep the skin dry and clean. Washing the affected area with some antiseptic lotion will help killing the microorganisms causing the disease.
