What is it and its statistics?

Herpes zoster, also known as shingles, is a condition that results from outbreak of latent Varicella zoster virus from dorsal horn or cranial nerve ganglia, confront since primary infection with Varicella (chicken pox). After the primary infection, the microorganism probably is often reactivated but adequate cell mediated immunity keeps clinical diseases away from the body. These symptoms-less reactivations and contact with people with such infection may enhance immune system.

In temperate climates, the condition affects children but in tropical climates, especially in isolated communities, it is commonly observed in adolescents or adults; in either case zoster might follow. The incidences of zoster in community samples range from 1.2-3.4 every 1000 person years. The incidences rise steep with age, being less than 1 on every 1000 person years in children and as very much alike 12 per 1000 person years in those aged over 65 yr.

How Does Herpes Zoster Affect the Eye?

Herpes zoster generally attacks the nerves around the eyes, particularly the nerves those supply the upper eyelids and forehead. If the virus affects the nerves that supply directly to the eyeballs, it can cause serious eye damage including corneal ulcers, inflammations and glaucoma. The problem re-appears at the same time as the skin rashes, or weeks after the vesicles have vanished. Lingering pains are the result of injured sensory nerve that might remain too sensitive for years after the virus attacks.

Symptoms of Herpes Zoster

Symptoms of Herpes Zoster might complain initially of feverish feeling, malaise, unilateral stabbing pains those mimic appendicitis, tingling sensations, itching, pleurisy, musculoskeletal annoyance or other conditions. If any adult or child is suffering from the herpes zoster virus and had no chickenpox as in childhood or had not received the chickenpox vaccine, there might be a severe incidence of chickenpox might develop, rather than shingles. Few of the main symptoms are –

• Genital lesions
• Warning symptoms of unilateral (on one side) pain, tingling, or burning sensation limited to a specific part of the body -- pain and burning sensation may be intense
• Reddening of the skin (erythema) followed by the appearance of blisters (vesicles)
• Grouped, dense, deep, small blisters that ooze and crust

Some of the other common symptoms include –

• High fever with uneazyness
• Chills along with burning, itching and pain in body
• Rashes in red color with blisters and headache
• Stomachache with some tingling and small blisters that crust
• Loss of hair and in some case abnormalities in tastes or vision
• Experience of malaise with lymph node enlargement

Causes of Herpes Zoster

Varicella Zoster virus is main causative factor for Herpes Zoster that is generally skin disorder disease, which affects by the chicken-pox virus. This virus might be hidden in nerves and after infection it develops Herpes zoster. The disease is commonly found in people having weak immunity and old aged adults.

Treatment of Herpes Zoster

Early treatment for herpes zoster, typically within 48-72 hr of onset, allows for the best chance of minimizing neurological squeals; the treatments are many. For instance, acyclovir helps controlling the skin eruption. Though it is not a cure, it helps healing the rashes, provides treatment is started early. Acyclovir is taken orally. Even taking acyclovir might not eliminate discomforts, burning sensation, or pains. If the discomfort is milder, taking Tylenol or similar mild painkillers would be helpful.

If one has too much pain, taking analgesics until the pain subsides is better. The pain is caused by inflammation of nerves. Cortisone can be taken orally and is sometimes used to treat the nervous inflammation. The blistering rashes usually clear in a few weeks. The discomforts might persist longer. Treating the rash gently is important. One should not open the blisters. As long as there are blisters or crusts, compress with dilute vinegar makes the patient more comfortable. Compressing the blisters or crusts for 10 minutes two times a daily with the mixture of ¼ cup of white vinegar and 2 quarts of lukewarm water is considered to be beneficial.

To prevent herpes zoster

It is necessary for one to keep the affected area dry and clean and should avoiding contact with infected person is advisable. Vaccine will be the best treatment for adults and teenagers one should also use calamine lotion on the affected area to relieve itching and pain.
