Eye stye is a bacterial infection that is because of some obstruction in oil producing glands present nearby the eyelids. Stye is seen as small bump on the eyelid. An Eye stye would occur when staphylococcal bacterium infects one of the tiny glands present at the base of the eyelids’ hairs and then would become inflamed. An infection through the bacteria is frequently transferred from one hair root to another while rubbing it to relieve severe itch. Stye is not harmful to the vision, and it can occur at any age to any gender.
The stye might form on either the inside or the outside of the eyelids. A stye would look like nothing more than some irritating bumps on the eyelids. And this is generally true. But untreated stye occasionally spreads and becomes serious infection. It is generally painful, producing Erythema, and focalized. It might produce edemas of the entire lids. Purulent materials might exude from the eyelash lines in external hordeola, while internal hordeola mature on the conjunctiva surface of eyelids. A sty developing at the base of eyelashes involve hair follicles of the eyelids and are called as external "hordeolum", whereas the term internal hordeolum means that a sty is because of blocked tarsal glands in the eyelids.
Symptoms of Stye
There would be a small red, painful bump present at the base of eyelids
A gritty impression or some feelings that there is something in the eyes is quite common
Copious watering of the eyes is one of the major symptoms
Typically, stye starts with a sensitivity to light, excessive production of the tears, and the sensation of some foreign bodies in the eyes. Soon the affected eyelid gets inflamed and turns red with local pain and tenderness as the stye develops fully.
Usually, the head of a stye points outward and in some less common type of eyelids’ infection, the involved oily glands present inside the eyelids might point inwards. Such type of internal stye might be quite painful as compared to more common external varieties.
Diagnosis of Stye
The diagnosing method is generally be made upon visual inspections and does not require any health care provider or doctor in most of the cases. If in case that abscess occurs, there would be a culture of the pus which is taken for identification of the infectious agent.
