Introduction to Telogen effluvium

It is quite normal to lose off about 100 hairs a day while one's combing, brushing, in the sinks or on the pillow covers! This is a result of a normal hair growing cycle. Hairs grow for a couple of years, and then rest for a couple of months, shed, and start growing one more time. Telogen is a name for the resting phase of the hair growing cycle. A Telogen effluvium is when some distress causes hair roots to be drawn prematurely into the resting phase. The condition can be either acute or chronic.

If there would be some shocking to a system, as many as 70 per cent of the scalp hairs then would have shed in large quantities for about 2 months after that shocking. This would sudden increase the overall hair fall, generally described as the hairs coming out in handfuls, is acute Telogen effluvium. This could be different situation than gradual genetic hairs getting thinner. Nevertheless, this may be seen in the less common chronic Telogen effluvium, only after a considerable amount of hairs have already been fallen.

Some more information about Telogen effluvium

A big number of different factors for Telogen effluvium persist. Among the common causes are; high fever, childbirths, severe infection, severe chronic illnesses, severe psychological distress, major surgeries or illness, over or under active thyroid gland, bad dietary habits with inadequate consumption of proteins, and a variety of medicines. Most hair fall from medications is of this kind and causes are retinoids, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, drugs those are anti-depressants, and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

In general, abrupt disseminate hair loss is marked several weeks to months after the incident has started the biological pattern for the hair fall. While the most often noticed hair loss would occur onto the scalp, some individuals might also mark hair loss elsewhere on the rest of the body. Significant hair shedding generally occurs while shampooing, combing, or even while gently making up the hair. Shedding generally slower down or decreases over 6-8 months once the causative factors for the hair fall are no more present. As some of the causes are ongoing situations, it is essential to determine the probable cause whenever possible and take proper measurements to prevent ongoing hair losses.

Important features for Telogen effluvium

The shed or loose hair has a club-shaped root typical of resting stage and Telogen hair might be easy to identify under the microscope. After shampooing, the bulk of present loosened hairs have often been shed and loosened hairs might not again appear until additional hairs get into the resting stage. When there is any question about the presence of such condition, a small piece of skin might be taken from the scalp in order to perform a procedure called biopsy and to be thoroughly checked under the microscope. In such way, the condition of the hair follicle, the tissue that produces the hair, can be determined.

However, there is no treatment required for most of the cases of Telogen effluvium. One should notice that the hairs fall out when new hairs growing underneath push them out. Thus with this kind of hair fall, hair falling out is a signal of hair re-growths. As the new hairs first come up out of the scalp and push out the dead hairs, a fine fringe of new hairs are often evident along with the forehead hairlines.

The most essential issue in Telogen effluvium is determining if underlying causes for the problem are present. Blood tests might require to be done if the causes are not obvious, such as borderline iron deficiency. If the Telogen effluvium is because of any medications, the medications need to be stopped. Whereas the causes of the hair fall is something like giving childbirth, any transient illnesses, or other self-limited problems the induced Telogen effluvium is also generally self-limiting and needs no remedies.

Chronic Telogen effluvium is latest evaluation and is common. It often strikes in women who previously had thickened hairs in their teens and 20s and still got an apparently normal head of hairs to any casual observers.
