Alopecia areata Introduction
Alopecia areata can be defined as a condition, which afflicts all human beings from teenage age to 50s. The condition begins with loss of hair mainly from the scalp and can also spread to other places of the body where the hairs normally grow. It generally starts in patches but can slowly turn spreading all across the scalp or body.
Hair loss throughout the scalp is medically termed as Alopecia totalis. Hair loss happening to the all over the body is medically termed as Alopecia universalis. The head is the most affected area that is natural since it has the largest number of hairs as onto the scalp, sides and even faces. Alopecia can occur in either males or females of any age, but children can also be affected the when this is because of some hereditary problems.
The Alopecia areata description
Alopecia areata, as said earlier, is a condition that causes hair loss from areas of the body, generally the scalp. It produces bald spots on the head particularly in the initial stages. And thus it is also popular as “spot baldness”. In 1-2 per cent of cases the problem is found to spread to the entire scalp or epidermis (an outermost layer of human skin). Amazingly, Alopecia areata would affect only the growing hairs as the follicles those are in rest-phase escape this destruction.
The theory says that truncating the growing phase of hairs would avoid the complete wiping-out of each hair follicle. Oftentimes, the alopecia areata causes the hair follicles entering into a telogen resting phase for avoiding the worst effects of the condition. And this would trigger significant shedding of the hairs. The hair follicles generally stay in this resting phase for prolonged periods of time.
In case, if the hair follicles try to get back to an anagen growing phase, the immune system targets the hair follicles and then would force them getting back into a resting phase one more time. The alopecia areata treatment is partially based on this fundament. The objective is reducing the action of the immune cells onto each of the hair follicle and also promoting the resting hair follicles returning into new growing activities.
The causes of Alopecia areata
The condition Alopecia areata is not come under the category of communicable diseases or simply putting the disease is not contagious. But it could be due to hereditary. It is observed that there have been some cases of babies being born with congenital (by birth) Alopecia areata.
Another important factor for the cause for Alopecia areata is the stress factor. Though, this is still under study. Most of the dermatologists state that the alopecia could be the result of bad dietary habits, stresses, poor blood circulation or polluted environments. If your beloved one has alopecia, you can help him/her recovering and get full re-growth by advising some judicious blend of diets, massages, detoxifying regimes. It can also help if he/she converts into a fully balanced dietary phase that contain full of whole food, organic vegetables, food that is free from refining or processing, eating lots of green, red and yellow vegetables preferably raw.
Alopecia areata treatment options
All across the world, Alopecia areata cure options can be divided into four major categories since they are widely accepted as therapeutic modalities. They are mentioned below –
- Immune inhibitors like steroids or Psoralen UV-A light (PUVA)
- Topical sensitizers like Squaric acid dibutylester (SADBE) and diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP)
- Non-specific irritants (such as Anthralin)
- Vasodilators like Minoxidil
Alopecia areata treatment and diagnosis shows that the disease contains autoimmunity, i.e. a failure for recognizing its own constituent parts. It mistakenly treats the hair follicles as foreign bodies and results into suppressing and stopping the overall hair growths.
For getting great hair friendly diets, one should be sure getting whole foods on a regular basis. One should prefer organic foods rather than refined or processed foods, and should take plenty of fresh and green vegetables, and essentially, drinking lots of water. Some holistic healers suggest taking Indian Gooseberry (Amla) fruit since this is traditionally consumed herb for strengthening the hairs, connective tissues and tiny muscles around hairs.
It is important staying as far away as possible from all kinds of chemically made cosmetic products and aerosol sprays. In fact, one should consciously stay away from all manmade pollutant and/or chemical. It is recommended to use Rosemary rinse of the hair on the scalp since it is widely used to treat hair loss.
