Hair Extension - Basics and Techniques     Bookmark and Share

What is hair extension?

Hair extension comes in many different types. There are different ways hair extensions can be done depending upon the method used to attach it to the body’s own hair, and in what sense the hair is used. Some techniques only differ from the components those are used or just from the terminology. With many methods, some type of glue or bond is used for affixation; such methods involve coating body’s own hair with certain chemicals or foreign substances. Some glues might be harmful for the hair or skin, others could play safe. One can ask the hairstylist what types of glues are to be used.

There are plenty of beauty hair salons those do not use a name brand extension method. Hair extensions do not last forever, sometimes due to the attachment breaks but generally due to the growth of body’s own hair. Extensions connected to the hair would get looser as body’s own hair grows (more or less 0.4" a month). Depending upon how fast body’s own hair grows and how good one takes care of her extensions they have to be modified, taken off or just tightened when they get too loosened.

Some of the techniques last longer than others but in general, we can quote them anywhere between 2-6 months. With some hair extensions, it has become now possible for reusing the hair that can save some money; this also depends upon the quality of the hair and how one look after it.

How do hair extensions work?

In the past, hair extensions are considered to be the area of uncertainty and false information were provided to customers. Nowadays, a system available has been planned with the latest and advanced technologies. Keratin bonds have been hung away from the head making it cozy to the customer. Thus, the extensions looking natural and hanging within the hair natural fall. The extensions of the hair are meshed in with body’s own hair. The keratin bond is fused in-between body’s own hair and the extensions. There is very less chance to get slippage. This system falls under a non direct heat coating with no usage of hot tongs for melting the bonds onto the hair; hence no moisture is lost underneath each bond applied. This would keep body’s own hair as strong as they were before, leaving them in their best possible look.

Some basic hair extensions

Basic cord tracking technique

This is also known as pinch or micro-weaving, or track locking. With the help of such method, thin track of hair is positioned horizontally onto the scalp and made stronger with weaving thread in lock stitches. The tracks are then placed following body’s own natural hair patterns. The track goes in close to the scalp for supporting the weaving piece. The weaving piece is then attached with weave threads and the person’s natural hair is combed for covering the tracks. This technique ends up in long lasting great looking hair extensions. Nevertheless, it can place stress onto the scalp and hair if not performed appropriately. Cord weaving might be used with natural or relaxed hair. Again, there must be care to limit total stress onto the hair and scalp.

Cornrow Tracking

This is the most former and very widely used weaving method. The technique is quite similar to that with tracking; only cornrow braids are being used rather than weaving cords to form the track.

Invisible Braiding

This is also known as Tree braiding. This popular corn-rowed method offers weaving hair to be put in without using any thread or glue. Weaved hair is braided in with the body’s own hair in corn-rowed braid layers closer to the scalps. As the braid gets in place, the weave hair is then separated from the body’s own hair in small sections and then pulled away from the braids in a particular pattern which would be the close one. The body’s own hair ends up fully braided and does as a support for weaved hair.

Invisible braids can also be good choice for anyone who wants to give their natural hair a break from any chemical. Invisible braids can be done quickly but may not last as long as compared to other traditional braid. This particular type of braid needs to be redone more often. For this reason it is always advised that synthetic hair should be used to do such type of braiding.
