It is a common fact that breastfeeding is good for the health of the babies. A recent study has reported that breastfeeding reduces the chances of developing type II diabetes in the baby.
These studies were carried on a mixed population that was fed on breast milk and also on feed supplements. It was found that 2 in 40 people were found to be diabetic because of the dependence on the formula feeding at an earlier stage. It was approximately estimated that the risk of developing diabetes type 2 was cut down by 39% by breast feeding.
The main culprit behind diabetes type II is obesity. But health officials suggest that the diet which the child gets in the early stages also plays a role in developing diabetes type II in the latter stages. Formula feeding was responsible for the type II diabetes in case of the 5% of the studied cases according to this survey.
The exact way by which the breast milk protects the baby against type II diabetes is still not known. It is just assumed for now that breast milk prevents type II diabetes indirectly as it has got a role to play in preventing the risk of obesity in the kids.
This theory is supported by a survey which showed that the kids who fed on the breast milk for longer durations were less likely to become obese than the kids who were fed on the feed supplements.
This survey has also showed that this was true in case of the kids whose mothers were diabetic. Even though the mothers were diabetic the children are less likely to develop type II diabetes if they are breastfed for longer durations.
Another interesting fact is that breastfeeding also cuts down the risk of developing type II diabetes in case of mothers. So, breastfeeding helps both the mother and the child in fighting against the diabetes type II.
