Dehydration

Water is one of the main components of our body. 75% of our body’s weight is because of the water in it. This water is mainly found in the cells of the body. Dehydration is a state of the body when there is deficiency of water. There is a constant loss of water from our bodies when we breathe, sit in air conditioners, when we sweat and when we urinate. Bowel movements also lead to some loss of water from the body.

During our day to day lives, we must drink water to replenish the water lost. If this lost water is not replenished, there are signs and symptoms of Dehydration. Thirst is a good indication that our body needs water. If there is not enough water in the body, hormones such as anti-diuretic work with the kidneys to limit the water lost in urine in order to conserve water.

There are some other reasons that cause severe dehydration. These are diarrhea, vomiting, sweat, diabetes, burns and inability to drink water or other fluids. Diarrhea is one of the most common causes of Dehydration.

Body also loses a significant amount of water due to sweating to cool itself. People who are diabetic, high level of blood sugar causes the sugar to get into urine followed by water. People who have burns can also get Dehydration as the water keeps flowing into the damaged skin.

If you are unable to get the minimum amount of water on day to day basis, you are likely to get Dehydration. There are few common symptoms of it including dry mouth, no sweat, no tears and muscle cramps. When Dehydration gets severe, there may be confusion and weakness which will finally lead to the state of coma and organ failure.

In case of Dehydration, prevention is the best. Else, fluid replacement is must. First, it is tried via mouth and in some cases, its given as IV. Dehydration is not a sudden process, it happens over time. It is best to recognize it at the earliest possible stage so that it can be treated at home. So, if you are having vomiting or diarrhea, add more liquids to your diet. Control your fever with the help of some paracetamol. But in serious cases, medical help must be taken.
