Blepharitis is a condition in which inflammation of the eyelid margins is seen. Redness of the eyes, itching and irritation of the eyelids in one or both eyes are the seen during this condition.
Most of the people assume this condition to be because of the similar symptoms. Doctors say that the recurring nature of Blepharitis is responsible for "recurrent conjunctivitis" in the majority of the aged people. Some people assume it to be another condition called "dry eye" because of the gritty sensation.
Two types of blepharitis are generally seen. They are:
- Anterior blepharitis- During this condition, anterior margin of the eyelid near the roots of the eyelashes is generally affected. Seborrheic dermatitis andinfection by Staphylococcus bacteria are assumed to be the main culprits behind this.
- Posterior blepharitis- During this condition the posterior margin of the eyelids, the part that makes contact with the eyes is affected. Oil glands present in this region mainly cause this condition. This type of condition is mostly seen in the people.
Treatment
The following steps performed at home can help in treating Blepharitis:
A warm wet compress to the lids with the help of a washcloth with hot water for about 2 minutes daily will bring relief to the eyes.
Washing the eye lids carefully with the help of a wash cloth and facial soap or non-burning baby shampoo after the bath will also help. The affected area must be gently rubbed during this process.
After the cleaning process a small amount of prescribed antibiotic ophthalmic ointment should be applied on the eye lids with finger tip. Make sure to close the eyes during this process. This should be done before going to the bed because the antibiotic may cause a blurred vision. Hence, it is not recommended to apply during the day time.
