As adults we think nothing of bathing; for us it is a mundane task that can be accomplished without any fuss. However, this attitude must be completely shed when it comes to bathing your newborn. It is a task that requires your complete attention and concentration. Taking your eyes off the baby even for a second during bathing your newborn can spell catastrophe.
Prior to starting bathing, make sure that you have someone handy who can answer any knock on the door or a phone call. During the 15-20 minutes when you are bathing the baby, you need to submit yourself to the task at hand.
Have all bath accessories handy while bathing your newborn. This can help you complete the bath uninterrupted. Just like you devote your attention to the baby while feeding, ensure that baby gets your undivided attention for the bath too.
Never allow a situation where you baby is more than an arm's length away from you. Due to their curious nature, babies can get into situations which require quick intervention.
If possible, make your baby sit in the bath tub rather than stand. Keeping a bath seat inside the tub will keep faucets out of reach of the child.
Never use a bath seat on textured or non-skid surfaces unless the manufacturer's instructions specifically state the seat is intended for such surfaces.
Bathing water must be warm to touch. Ideally, if you can dip your finger in water without feeling too warm, it is suitable for water. Even so, it is advisable to start the bath by wetting the feet first.
Do not attempt to lift the baby out of the tub along with bath seat or ring. If the bath seat tilts, it is dangerous, and must be discontinued.
After the bath, wrapping baby in a big towel to soak moisture is recommended. Gentle patting will take away excess water.
