After studying about the different categories related with medicines and herbs combinations we will discuss here about different categories of several other drugs. These mainly consist of the derived substances from different sources like minerals vegetables amine products as well as herbs.

  • Tail Varga: -All varieties of oils are taken in this category. This category contains both edible and medicinal oils. For example Kusumbh, malakangani, karanj, til and mustard and are taken in tail varga.
  • Kshaartraya: -The three types of natural alkalis are collectively known as Kshaartraya. The same proportion mixes of yavakshaar, sarjikshaar and tankan kshaar are called kshaar traya. All these alkalis are derived from natural sources.
  • Lavan panchak: - Saurvanchal (Black salt), saindhava (Rock) Vidnamak (a type of salt) Reha, and Samudra (sea salt) are collectively termed as lavan panchak. These five salts are mainly used in gastro intestinal disorders.
  • Jeeviniya Gana: - There are 12 drugs in jeeviniya gana. It includes 8 drugs of Ashtavarga and 4 other drugs of all 12 drug are: - Jeevak, Rishabak, Meda, Mahameda, Kakoli, Ksheerkakoli, Riddhi, Vriddhi, mugdaparni, maashparni, jeevanti and mulethi. This category in elaborated in charka Samhita, of these 12 drugs only 4 drugs mugdaparni, maashparni, jeevanti and mulethi are available. The rest 8 are extinct one.
  • Draavak Gana: - The following six drugs are: - gunja, madhu (honey), gud (jaggery) ghee, tankana (Borax) and Guggul (Commiphora mukal extract) termed as dravakgana. These are used for melting or decreasing the melting point of metals.
  • Krishna Varga: - The krishnavarga drugs are used for pigmenting the mercury in Rasashastra. The following substances are taken in Krishanavarga. Kela, karela, Hartaki, Bahera, Amalaki, Nili, Nala, Mud, Kasis (vitriol) and Keri (green mango) all taken in equal weight are termed as Krishna varga.
  • Peetvarga: - The pigmenting category for yellow coloration is called peetvarga peet means yellow. Kusumbh pushp (flower), palaash pushp, Haridra, daruharidra, kuchandan, and mehandi collectively in same proportion are termed as peetvarga.
  • Raktanarga: - Manjishta, kesar, laksha, khadir and asan in same weight are called Raktanarga.
  • Shuklavarga: - Chuna (lime stone), Kachhap prashta bhasma (the calcinated ash) shankhabhasma and varatika bhasma all taken in equal weight proportion are termed in the shuklavarga.
  • Shweta varga: - The following substances are: - tagar, kutza, kindapushpa, Shewta gunja, jeevanti, and Shweta kamal kanda, collectively called Shewta varga.
  • Vitvarga: - The excreta of kabutar (pigeon) Nilkantha (Blue jay) Giddha (Eagle), Mor (peacock) and Murga (Cock) taken in same proportion is called Vitvarga that  means excreta.
  • Vishavarga (Poison category): - Vatsanabh, haridra vish saktuka, pradipan shrangik, kalkuta, halahal and bramhaputra are taken in vishvarga.
  • Upavish Varga (Less acute poisons): - Arka ksheer (Milk of Aak / Sap.) sehund ksheer kalihari, kaner, gunja, Ahiphena and dhatura are seven drugs categorized as upavishavarga.
  • Amlavarga (Acid category): - Amlavetas, janbiri nimbu, matulung nimbu, chankamla, Narang, Imli and changeri are termed as amla varga.
  • Parad Jaaruaarth Vid: - All the kshaarashtaka, Amla varga, mutravarga, lavan, gandhak (sulphor), Hartal (Arsenic), Manashila, Kasis, Ambar, spathika, Kankushta and Kampillak, thoroughly mixed (after taking in equal proportion) and processed in any acidic solution. After drying up of the solution make a pill of the paste. This pill is used for processing parad jaarn (a typical process of mercuric purification).
  • All these major terms used in Bhaishajiya Kalpana are listed above. While learning about the general processing of Ayurveda medicine these terms help us a lot to know it in a better way.
