The Corolla brand has been one of the many successful models for Toyota. In regards to the Indian subcontinent, people simply love the cars these Japanese make. The output capacity of the petrol variant is 103 kW at 6400 rpm and 173 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. All the different petrol variants have a 6 speed manual transmission with electronic fuel injection system. An exclusive variant 1.8 VL comes in with a Super CVT-i with 7 speed Sequential Shiftmatic Transmission.

2011 Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel

The diesel variant is expectedly more powerful than its gasoline counterpart having a 1364 cc 4 Cylinder D-4D Diesel Engine with Variable Nozzle Turbo and Intercooler.

The fuel supply system is through common rail and all the variants have a 6 speed manual transmission, the maximum power is 65 kW at 3800 rpm and an impressive torque of 205 Nm at 1800 – 2800 rpm.

Is The New Altis Spacious Enough?

The new Altis is about 179 inches long, 69 inches wide and 58 inches high. With a ground clearance of close to 7 inches and a 475 liter trunk space the car can easily fit in 5 people and enough luggage of a family.

New 2011 Corolla Altis comes in with chrome radiator grille, chrome inserted side protective moulding and chrome plated door belt moulding. Door handles, mud flaps, front and rear bumpers are all of body color. The entry level Altis has steel wheels with full wheel cover however the higher variants come in with 7 spoke alloy wheel.

For that matter there are a lot of automatic features that do not come in the entry level variant and are only available with the more expensive 2011 Corolla Altis. For instance the higher variants are all leather upholstered with wood finishes on centre cluster, door armrests, Shift lever and knobs.

Cruise Control and some exclusive features are only available in the highest petrol and diesel variant. Certain standard features appear in all the models such as power windows, Multi Information Display and console boxes etc.

How Safe Is The New Altis?

Honestly, if safety features are something one would place as a top priority, with increasingly worrying traffic these days, it is strictly advisable not go for the entry level Corolla Altis. Though it has an Anti-Lock Braking System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution yet it doesn’t deploy enough passive safety features.

The other variants come in with airbags for the driver and the passenger. I would have loved to see some side curtain airbags securing the rear occupants but that is not something Toyota has ensure in this model.

The headlamps have an automatic leveling system and the front fog lamps act as the active features whenever needed. Seat Belt apart from the warning feature has Pretensioner and Force Limiter. The reverse sensors and impact sensing fuel cut system features are some really beneficial security features to have on board.

Reception

Toyota is pretty certain with their projected sales and the pricing tells us a lot of their homework. With skyrocketing petrol prices, diesel variants are in high demand and bearing that in mind, they have not kept three diesel variants but the pricing is in line with the petrol models. It is almost certain they expect better sales with their D models.

If the new 2011 Corolla Altis has been receiving a lot of hype so have the rivals – new Honda Civic and new Hyundai Sonata Transform. Honda Civic is closely priced to the Corolla Altis models and there is bound to be a tough fight between the two majors.

Hyundai Sonata Transform may be a little more expensive than the two but with more power, better engine and more luxury and security aspects may just turn in a good segment of buyers. While we are set for a battle among the majors let’s just wait for a few weeks to spot who emerges with a winning trend.
