Melasma is the discoloration of the skin, which is usually a brown or tan colored patchy hyper-pigmentation affecting the face. This is a very common skin disorder and usually affects the upper lip, upper cheeks, chin and forehead. It is of four types, and is classified based on the pattern of pigmentation: dermal, epidermal, mixed, and idiopathic for which dark skinned people are more susceptible. Melasma can affect anyone, but the general tendency is more towards females, and especially those who are on contraceptives of any kind.
Therefore it is quite common in women aged 20 to 25 years. Melasma occurs due to a host of other reasons like exposure to sun, hormone replacement therapy, genetic predisposition, and anti-seizure medicines. It is common in pregnancy because of increased secretion of hormones like estrogen and progesterone.
Although the usual treatment prescribed is regular application of sunscreen and other fading creams, there are some natural cures which can be used effectively to treat melasma. Here are some natural solutions which are both effective as well as have no side effects:
Best Natural Cures For Melasma
It contains Mucilaginous Polysaccharide, a compound that softens and lightens your dark spots. To use this remedy, if you can get your hands on a plant, that would be ideal, if not just purchase some gel from the chemist. Massage the gel over your patches and make sure the strokes are in circular motion. Do this for 15 minutes and repeat thrice a day. Using this method will make your patches lighter.
It is considered to naturally help in exfoliating. For best results, mix a teaspoon of oatmeal in 3 tablespoons for water and let it soak for 10 minutes. After which you can apply it on your face and use it like you would use a scrub. Make sure to direct the scrubbing in a circular motion. Do this at least once in two days to see effective results. Oatmeal is milder than most of the artificial exfoliators.
It contains curcumin as an active ingredient, and this has skin lightening properties. In addition to this, it has anti-oxidant properties also. To use it, mix equal amounts of turmeric in mustard oil or water as per your preference and make a thick paste.
Apply this all over your spots thoroughly and leave it for at least 25 minutes, after which wash it off with cold water for a glowing complexion and less visible spots.
Lemon contains citric acid that lightens the skin tone. Applying it every day on your spots helps to lighten them. To use it, squeeze the juice of one fresh lemon and add a few drops of water to it, then apply it over your spots and leave it on for 10 minutes. During this time, keep reapplying whenever your face gets dry. This is one of the most useful solutions, even when used in isolation!
Green papaya contains anti oxidants and skin lightening properties. Mash a portion of green papaya, depending on how much area you want to cover and then spread it evenly on your face. Let it sit like this for 15-20 minutes and then rinse off with cold water. You must use this remedy twice a day to ensure fast fading of the spots. When it is used in conjunction with the above techniques, it can yield very fast results.
